digitalmars.D - Skills for Dlang?

I recently started playing around with Codex and ran into an

I'm curious if anyone out there has put together D-specific agent
skills?

And also in general, what skills do people find useful when
programming with D?

skills are just strings; if you told it to use dustmite and it worked copy and paste what you said into a markdown file and automagicly it may work a 2nd time

I don't have anything that I'd share publicly, due to the specific nature of the work I'm doing, but in general terms I create skill files that capture processes and preferences. For example, when I translate C code to D, I want the for loops converted to foreach loops, I want to change i and j indexes to ii and jj indexes, and that sort of thing. I record these preferences in one or more skill.md files as I go. Model quality with D can vary, so sometimes putting knowledge in skill files delivers more accurate results. (This is more relevant for local models like Qwen 3.6 or Gemma 4 than for Codex.)

Hi, I have not found any skills for D so I created one myself. But I call it a meta-skill as it contains a few sub-skills: * `SKILL.md` - the main skill definition (name, description, usage trigger, D language cheat sheet) * `references/language.md` - full D language reference (types, memory model, templates, CTFE, etc.) * `references/phobos.md` - Phobos standard library reference * `references/vibed.md` - vibe.d web/async framework reference * `references/vibe-mongodriver.md` - MongoDB driver reference * `references/postgresql.md` - PostgreSQL driver reference * `references/minio-d.md` - MinIO/S3 client reference You can download it here: https://filebin.net/ujzo12h8saouczug It will be available for 6 days from the time of my post. I would have given a git link, but I host git myself with Gitea and something happened to my server - cannot access it for now. I will check it when I get home and then post the link.

I was a little worried that having these things as too detailed would use up too many tokens. Maybe size of skills depends on the capability of the model you're using. I ultimately did something similar. I ultimately asked ChatGPT to do a first pass and then passed that to GPT-6 Astra to give its opinion with an eye toward not using too many tokens. The initial commit is here: https://github.com/libmir/mir-stat/commit/42c8ec656eddddf49211fe1753266dcf565a6e0c and I think mostly in line with what I am currently working with.

I believe its fundamentally impossible to have an ai write a good skill Your original prompt for that skill is such and such vector in the word field; either the ai can walk that vector field to a useful place or it cant. Even in the case the skill is useful your original prompt was likely smaller and by virtue of your prompt generating it from a one-way process of ai "thinking", was part of a greater connected component of useful thought-vectors

Well, the `SKILL.md` is small and similar to table of contents with some description and additional instructions. It only explains the basics, and what reference documents to look up and when it might need them. Then LLM looks up the relevant reference it needs. **It does not read the entire skill at once.**

This is the best resource on skills I encountered: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYNs80FKIVc Skills became more useful to me after watching that. The one place where I deviate a bit from standard practice is including the skill(s) to use directly in my prompt, rather than relying on the description to tell the LLM when to use it.

Do you use D? Did you actually use these projects at all, or just used a skill like Matt's /create-skill and then put those to your repo??

I use them myself for development, not just D. I find especially useful the AI Agents instructions I have for the Dev Team. Originally, I created them at my company to use with [Multica](https://github.com/multica-ai/multica) agent orchestrator to aid the fast-paced development cycles; revised them multiple times. I basically update one file and then tell AI to update every other file similarly based on its context. I did not use /create-skill.

Does Multica support JIRA by any chance?

It should be supported, there is a PR for that, but I did not try it. Even if it is not supported, you can simply create an agent and/or MCP that will connect to Jira and sync all issues with Multica. Another option is to simply vibe-code it with LLM. I have added admin panel this way to configure multiple users.

You may find [this](https://filebin.net/1phdol8ztbtolgi8) useful as well. It is an Excel comparison of AI models for coding. I usually use OpenRouter with many AI models available under one endpoint. Look at `My verdict` column. The `Specialization/Weakness` columns were mostly AI generated. It does not include Claude models because Claude is the best by default.

I found it useful to generate/edit skill about particular libraries for fluency, it should somehow be possible in DUB to provide a skill for a package you publish. This is an attack vector for the LLM, but so it foreign code so it can rely on the same trust system that already exist.

True, but LLM skills have an extremely bad record. This study found security issues in 37% of posted skills: https://snyk.io/blog/toxicskills-malicious-ai-agent-skills-clawhub/ That's likely due to a high correlation between AI use and not bothering to read code.

Yeah but I'd want a standard way to share those and just type "dub learn-skills" for each project, or something similar.

There are open source standards for installing skills like: "https://agent-plugins.org/" so if somone wants a skill for the lib he can make git repository compatible with ai harnesses. Dub can expose a simple command showing the git repository name from which harness can be installed. Nicer, but more costly would be for it to share the commands for different harnesses as well.

Actually putting llms.txt and llms-fulls.txt on github page / docs should help. Probably adding a fields on dub.json/dub.sdl could help!
