Try removing news.digitalmars.com adding it again and subscribing to the
newsgroups again.
Sorry about the inconvenience... I just rebuild the history and overview

Has nothing to do with "Look out" or any other news-reader, but
the server side GROUP response. How can the client-side fix or ignore
a wrong number in that response?. I told you this already.

Pretty much the same:
NNTP Log started at 11/18/2003 01:18:00
NNTP: 01:18:00 [db] Connecting to 'news.digitalmars.com' on port 119.

NNTP: 01:18:01 [rx] 200 digitalmars.com InterNetNews NNRP server INN 2.3.2
ready (posting ok).
NNTP: 01:18:01 [tx] GROUP c++.dos.32-bits
NNTP: 01:18:01 [rx] 211 1218 1 409 c++.dos.32-bits
NNTP: 01:18:01 [db] Connection closed.
I.e. the 'estimated # of msg' (1218) is larger than last msg # (409).
Because "Outhouse Depress" has # 1-409 cached locally, it
is showing 809 new/unread msgs. Same for the other "c++" groups.
Maybe Firebird is smarter than OE and uses the minimum of the two.
But no way resubscribing or resetting the list will cause the cached #
to be higher than > 409.

It's worse now. The number of 'unread' messages is now fixed at double the
previous number. Unsubscribing and resubscribing doesn't fix it. Does this
work correctly for anyone who isn't using Outlook Express? Up until last
week, OE worked fine on this.

Sure it is...
I *refuse* to use Look Out "Outlook" for email or news. Use Mozilla
Thunderbird instead. I have deleted the news.digitalmars.com account.
Went to the disk to delete the cache, well news.digitalmars.com under
the News directory. Restarted Thunderbird. Created news.digitalmars.com
again and subscribed to all the newsgroups... No problem there...
I just tried Opera www.opera.com as I use Opera as second next to
Mozilla... Opera is even better. Just hit the newsgroups. It updated
everything without my intervention.
I wonder how "Look Out" deals with newsgroups that expire articles. Just
because some clients do not know how to deal with a news server does not
mean that the server is the problem...

You could use the HTTP interface to the newsgroups...
That does not seem to have any problems...

No, you are misreading things...
I am reponsible for the HTTP, NTTP, FTP, CVS, etc servers. I am not
reponsible for Outlook, Outlook Express and other news reader software
and browsers.
Server maintenance required to cleanup, renumber the articles and
recreate the overview and history databases. (As it turned out that
people do 'cancel' news articles from the server.) As far as I can tell
the only news reader having serious problems with are the Microsoft
products. (Mozilla recovered, so did Thunderbird. Opera never even
showed one sign of a problem.)
Because people use these products they seem to make the mistake that I
am reponsible for them if they do not work properly. I however don't
think I am. I have given more advice than required to fix their problems
and now because the product does not work I am at fault?
The unfortunate fact in this situation is that users of these particular
problems have hardluck. But really... Is that my responsibility???
Excuse me for not having the time to install Outlook, or Outlook Express
and trying to solve this problem. I've got to make an income to keep
this all going.
Basically the solution is to get rid of the database or files or
whatever your newsreader uses to store the reference information and
make sure that you download all the news headers again. I confirmed this
in Thunderbird where it worked like a charm. An other hint might be to
do a search in www.google.com for Outlook+NNTP+renumber or something
like that. Or search on the message Outlook gives. The solution might be
very simple...
Thanks!

Unfortunately Jan, for many of us, we work in organisations which do
not allow us to install odd software which our IT department sees as
"potential virus/worm/trojans".
For me I can't use Netscape or others because the proxy box does not
allow direct connection to the net. So I guess the Web interface might
be the only sensible method.

If that didn't work you have not tried eveything. I was able to create a
news.digitalmars.com news account in OE and download each and every
message in the group without problems. I had to toy around a little with
the synchonization settings though. I think I clicked on just
news.digitalmars.com and used the window on the right to change settings
and synchronize or download. A progress bar appeared and it downloaded
EVERYTHING.
The bad thing however was that once I tried to replicate this by

There seem to be several alternatives that work fine:
* Mozilla (www.mozilla.org)

* Opera (www.opera.com)
Maybe if anyone has the time, they can do some further research on it.
I will check into it some more when I have time tomorrow or after.

I'm not sure whether someone else has tried all this, but I reached my
irritation point, and deleted all groups, and the newsgroup account,
compacting the folders at each step. I also tried all the options of
removing message bodies, deleting and even resetting, again compacting
at each step.
None of this worked.
As a last resort I created a DM news account on a machine that's never
been used, and it does exactly the same thing.
Now I am not qualified to stipulate the cause, but what I can now say
is that something with DM news is different to that of any other news
server that I use, and it is entirely unrelated to any ghost stuff
hanging around on the client machine. It may well be an inadequacy of
OE, but the fact remains that if you cannot, or will not, use another
reader, the DM groups are broken.
:(
I understand Jan's predicament; it's good of him to provide the
servers. Maybe my "efforts" can at least save anyone else from further
futile attempts.
Maybe if anyone has the time, they can do some further research on it.
Fingers crossed.

I'm not Outlook user but I had strange behaviour too with Xnews. One day
(about week ago) all 'Unread' numbers on news.digitalmars.com increased
with 2. I had to 'Catch Up' function to empty them but I lost my marked as
unreaded posts. Now everything seems work fine.
