It's a time warp, you're suddenly thrust into DOS, dealing with 
DOS commands.  My Unix is better than my DOS, at this point, but 
the logic & structure are still the same.  You might need to 
navigate DOS a little, but once you're up, it seems DOSBOX saves 
your games, and keeps track of your record.

You will need the manual!  Here's a crappy scan, but the only one 
I found, seems to work well enough.

Most keystrokes work well, but some are mapped to the Mac OSX, 
but you can still access them via the Empire menu.  Plays just 
like it did back in the olden days.
