I've been told that there are problems with the web-interface for this
newsgroup and that I should use a reader, I use thunderbird but I don't know
exactly how to get it to read digitalmars, or what the server information is.
Any advice?

You can subscribe using bog standard email by going here: http://lists.puremagic.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/digitalmars-d No reader required. Just use gmail or your existing email account. You can even create a new gmail account solely for the purpose of reading this group. That's a cool thing to do because gmail does all the required threading /and/ keeps out spam.

That doesn't allow you to read the discussion as a thread (in a treeview fashion), though. Here's the settings I use with my Opera: http://thecybershadow.net/dump/13b6b0bb281038c0581e049e927e8829/000004FD.png -- Best regards, Vladimir mailto:thecybershadow gmail.com

I really just need to know the port, and confirm that the server is news.digitalmars.com

Reply to Ender,

I've been told that there are problems with the web-interface for this
newsgroup and that I should use a reader, I use thunderbird but I
don't know exactly how to get it to read digitalmars, or what the
 server information is. Any advice?

I don't known about the current version, but the last time I used thunderbird it kept showing bugs in the NG part. My preferred reader is OmeaReader by JetBrains. It has some nice features like: -defaults to storing messages locally (t-bird by default only caches until you shut down) -responsive even while doing stuff in the background -pre-loads message bodies (T-bird seemed to wait until I tried to look at a post) some issues with it. -no spell check -has a tendency to drop leading white space

I use Thuderbird with no problems. Tools -> Account Settings -> Add Account -> Newsgroup Account Your name (what ever) Your email (put something that spam will not find) Next news.digitalmars.com Right click on the news.digitalmars.com now in thunderbird and go subscribe. I'd subscribe to these groups: Digitalmars.D (this one) Digitalmars.D.Announce Digitalmars.D.learn

Would you care to elaborate on what forms of email addresses spambots will ignore? The usual practice is to either: - use an email address separate from the one you regularly use, such as one from a webmail service - munge your email address - though this is discouraged by some <snip>

There don't seem to be any such newsgroups. However, there are such 'groups as digitalmars.D digitalmars.D.announce digitalmars.D.learn Yes, newsgroup names are case-sensitive. Stewart.
