On the other hand, how much work would it take to get the ‘old’ dmdfe 
working with the current 1.004 release?

I think the original developer was Ben Hinkle. I managed to update DMDFE 
  once, so it shouldn't be too dificult. If you update it, try to 
contact the author, to pass it upstream.
