digitalmars.D.announce - GSoC 2015 - Application Rejected

Unfortunately our organizational proposal for the 2015 Google 
Summer of Code was rejected.  Thanks to everyone who helped out 
on this, especially to those who volunteered to mentor.

I've asked Google to provide me with feedback, and I will post 
that here once/if I get something from them.

If I am not asked to resign I am happy to volunteer for this post 
again next year. Hopefully I can learn something from this year 
and any feedback they provide.

Google's Melange site is a disgrace, it is truly horrible. I suspect=20

I guess I don't get a dreadful t-shirt this year which costs more to=20
ship than it's worth!

I think the trick here is to assume an element of arbitrariness in the=20
decision making, and just to put up a proposal next year with some=20
good doable projects on an appealing student accessible website.

It would almost be worth having our application rejected just to
have that in our list of projects ... just think of all the great

Sort of odd, since we had ideas listed with potential mentors, 
difficulty levels, and so forth ... feels sort of like a generic 
response again.

Martin, thanks.  If you can get in on the IRC that would be 
great.  Google returned my message but it was basically "We had a 
lot of hard decisions, and your organization was one of those" 
... I bet everyone who failed an application gets the same 
feedback :o)

I suspect it is like any decision making process where there are N=20
places for M applications and N << M, many get culled by fairly=20
arbitrary criteria simply to get the numbers down and make the=20
decision making tractable.

We are going through this right now with the DevoxxUK 2015 programme=20
committee, and many of us have a fear we might have missed a good=20
proposal in the mass culling needed to get few enough selected not to=20
have an overburdened programme.  =20

I imagine you are correct.  I understand that Google can't take 
everyone, and they no doubt have some tough choices, so I don't 
feel that we have been unfairly treated in any way.  I am hoping 
though we can get some feedback so that next year's entry can be 
better though.

I am sure that in some sense many projects are treated unfairly, it is=20
just a sort of arbitrary unfairness rather than any specifically=20
targeted.

Clearly D satisfies the "is not a minuscule niche", "has reasonable=20
mentors", "has projects", "is FOSS", and the fail of "could fund this=20
some other way". My guess would be the "can be done in 8 weeks by a=20
student" was seen as the problem for too many of the proposals.

It will be interesting to see if the total number of internships is=20
smaller to match the decrease in organizations.

In Canada (were are about 1/2 way between the Brits + Americans) 
at least it was/is a derogatory term for someone who wasn't too 
bright. I always thought the name was a bit awkward because of 
that, and I should have remembered that they renamed it Nim.

might yield some insight. I ran a cursory read of Clojure's idea page

I remember someone somewhere suggested to make our own summer of 
code (however I don't know how this would look like). As for a 
"free money" from corporations I'm  skeptical in general.

I don't think Fedora even requests money from GSoC itself anymore. Red
Hat funding it makes sense though. And it's not like there aren't
companies with 9+ zeros active in and aware of this community. And one
notable one in particular has decent multipliers over even Red Hat's
size. I see no reason why targeted GSoC-like things can't be organized
by those companies besides a presumed lack of ROI.

Thanks, Craig. I'm glad you asked, please follow through politely if at 
first you don't get an answer; Carol is very nice but (a) at this point 
in the GSoC timeline she's super busy, and (b) she won't reply to any 
question about rejection that alleges unfairness. So a kind request for 
what we can do in the future to improve our chances might fare well.

We've done well, I think, in 2011 and 2012 (except for the one student 
who failed to deliver) so something about our reporting might have 
failed GSoC's expectations.

There isn't really much, just our proposal/mentors lists.  
Haven't heard anything extra from Google. I had one IRC chat with 
the Google people, but it was a technical one about who to work 
with Melange - surprise :o)
