I don't know why this was brought up on the silq post on the
announce forums

really like the idea of having a forum for started, work-in-progress or
finished projects.

I would like to ask here more generally: can we get a Projects
sub forum / mailing list on forum.dlang.org?

I think having a Projects list between General and Announce would
fit quite well and I do like the idea of it a lot.

I'm generally supportive of this, but it could backfire if it's not very active. Someone new to the language could get the impression that a few projects were started here and there, and now they're all dead. There would need to be regular project updates (even if they're small). The number of project-related posts in the announce forum is not encouraging. I suppose it's possible that announce is currently used only for major announcements. It wouldn't look good if that's all we had in a subforum dedicated to projects.

I don't think announcements is a good match. Announcements is for releases and of certain quality, things people are proud to show to others. I imagine Projects would be full of WIP projects, something people are experimenting on. I assume there are many people working on stuff in D, which they never finish so you never learn about those. Also, sometimes I try to show D to my friends and coworkers. They Java, C++, but they aren't aware of less mainstream languages like Go, Rust, D, Nim etc. First question they ask me is "what kind of stuff people do with D"? I wish I could point them to this forum for them to look around. I usually show them the old dsource forums http://dsource.org/forums/ as "what people used D for", but it's not active anymore so it's not a good reference either.

That's why I like the idea of one combined feed of short posts: should keep some activity and people can just scroll down and get some idea of variety. I'll prolly code my little thingy over the weekend.

You should put this (with the link to your blog about) on announce (if you are satisfied with the functionality?). And what about linking it from code.dlang.org to invite people just publishing updates or new DUB packages to write a few words about? Regards mt.

I promise to flood it with a lot of noise.

Yes, but it requires the action of three people: - Vladimir (for DFeed, i.e. forum.dlang.org) - Walter (for NNTP) - Brad (for the mailing list, e.g. http://lists.puremagic.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/digitalmars-d-announce) Ping me if you miss the contact details for them. PS: It would be a lot easier if DFeed would managed everything ...

We already have this problem with the other subforums that aren't used anymore. They really should be removed or at least hidden from the web interface.

That's because most of those are outside the interesting areas...DWT, Study (Andrei's thing), .... But for projects...if people are not hacking around and doing stuff in the language, what else is its use? The dlang discord is full of projects and experiments...if only you're onnit.
They really should be removed or at least hidden from the web

You misunderstood me. I was arguing that we already have this problem, hence obviously it can't be such a big deal. My point that these old forums (no activity > 1 year) should be hidden/removed wasn't directed at the projects repository.

What's wrong with DWT? GUI is quite a hot topic in these forums from time to time. -- /Jacob Carlborg

I think having a Projects list between General and Announce
would fit quite well and I do like the idea of it a lot.
That sounds very good! And if something looks attractive enough, it might become a blog post later. (=> Mike Parker) We have so many updates at https://code.dlang.org/ (1855 packages!) and probably many others are using exactly this packages to try something new, it would be quite interesting to learn, what the Dlang professionals most active in the forum are working on. +1

I think it's a great idea. In particular because Github doesn't make it easy to discover D projects. For example the page on https://github.com/topics/d doesn't have the ability to sort by create date. Plus it might show up projects that are completely empty. And of course people might be using a different DVCS host altogether.

Has anything been done in this direction already? Did we get any feedback from the people in charge?

What if we added a Gratitude forum? I love the wholesome vibes I get from the D community and I'd love to preserve it.

That would be a largely empty forum.
