Hi.

I wrote down a few things I am doing for covid preparedness and
thought I should share them here. It was written hurriedly for
internal use, but maybe it could be interesting to others.

PRs welcomed.

A couple lessons we learned in NZ that worked extremely well:

Hand sanitizer at every chance you can get (i.e. every time you enter a
building, use it).

Distance yourself, 2 meters.

What we didn't do until much later (but by the looks of things, if it
gets bad we would have no choice): masks. This is preventative. You will
not know that you have COVID-19 until it is too late.

Last but no less important: Stay at home! If you are not perfectly
healthy, keep away from others.

We had a non existent flu season this year because of all these measures.

Is Symmetry offering the hand sanitizer and where possible encouraging
social distancing within their offices?

Without discussing internal affairs too much, infer as you see fit: I haven't been in person to a Symmetry office since the end of February. I have moved >100 miles drive away from the office and have no regrets. If I catch covid, it won't be from a colleague.

We started preparing for everyone to work from home in January and the final instruction not to come into the office went out Feb 23. We told everyone in January to prepare by having three weeks of food at home, order masks and to consider vitamin D. We pay for vitamin D tests for all employees and consultants and we are trialling antigen strip tests with the hope we can pay for weekly testing of Symmetry people and their families. We have also written some public policy proposals to try to improve Covid policy in the UK. It's not really an issue to have social distancing within the office because they have been closed since February and I don't see a way that we can reopen any time soon. Hand sanitiser is a good idea if you can't safely wash your hands, but for a disease spread by droplets and aerosol it's only something. Our building is owned by the NHS so unfortunately it's tough to get them to fit HEPA filters and viricidal UV to the HVAC. A bare minimum to reopen safely. We are opening a Jersey office and giving people the option to relocate here. It's a bit easier to govern an island than a great nation.

It is perhaps worth noting that there has been a shortage in some areas of = the UK of some of the reagents for doing many of the biochemistry (yellow SST vial) tests associated with many "blood test" in the last few weeks. Some 4,500 IU vitamin D capsules are appearing again online, including Amaz= on, so my panic is over (at least for now). OH research over the years indicates that coconut oil (not sunflower oil) carried vitamin D > 3,000 IU in capsules taken together with some form of Omega 3/Omega 6 capsule is the best way of getting vitamin D absorbed into = the body. Mixed vitamin D and vitamin K tend to be not so good. --=20 Russel. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Dr Russel Winder t: +44 20 7585 2200 41 Buckmaster Road m: +44 7770 465 077 London SW11 1EN, UK w: www.russel.org.uk

Sorry to hear that. I hope you're better now. Yes - I had it, and it was fine initially and then it wasn't so easy. I don't think it would have gone very well if I hadn't prepared for certain deficiencies in our national health service and been able to treat myself. I did have long covid but I am mostly better now. Long covid is much more of a risk than death for most younger people. You know it was interesting reading about the US politicians receiving a special briefing and then selling all their stocks. I thought to myself, if they had only read Reddit and followed some insightful people on Twitter they would have been by far better informed even in January. So if we were able to prepare reasonably well so far this year then I owe it to social media and open source.

Interesting thanks for the experimentation! At this point Vit D seems like a good contender to lessen impact of COVID, as multiple studies have demonstrated. The adverse effect is likely inexistant as 60% of people are in need of more vit D anyway.
