digitalmars.D - [OT] DConf - How to survive without a car?

reply Lionello Lunesu <lionello lunesu.remove.com> writes:
Hi all,

After last year's incident with my tires getting slashed, I'm really
hoping I can do without a car during this year's DConf. How feasible is
this?

I'll be staying at Aloft. Would be great if there's someone I can share
a ride with. I've also seen there's a public bus going more or less to
FB and back, so I should be good there. (Right?)

But how about getting to SFO or down town? Am I causing myself a whole
lot of pain (albeit of a different kind) by not renting a car? To be
clear, I'm not looking for an economical option, just peace of mind.

I'm wondering about this myself. My current plan to get from SFO to the Aloft is via BART (SFO -> Balboa Park -> Bay Fair -> Freemont) and then take a bus or a taxi from Freemont to the hotel. It looks like one could take bus 200 from the Aloft to the Ardenwood Park-and-ride, transfer to bus DB, and cross the bridge to Facebook. But, thinking about it a little more, a car is starting to look pretty good. Mike

I had a car last year, and we stuffed it to the gills with people going between FB and Aloft. Will do so again this year.

Speaking of cars, what time will people be down in the lobby at aloft?

I will have a car as well, but I'm staying on the other side of the bay. I can take three people from FB to Aloft and back to anywhere between FB and Main Street.

Just FYI, I took BART and buses to my hotel last year, it took 2.5 hours. When Andrew drove me back to the airport from facebook, it took 30 minutes. Something to think about :) Also, the site 511.org is awesome for using public transportation in the bay area.

This seems to still be an open question - what time to gather? I will be staying at Aloft, and will not have a car. If anyone has a car and extra room, I'd be happy to bum a ride. If there are no rides I'll just get a taxi, would be happy to share with others.

The GM from Aloft replied to my inquiry about transportation: "There are shuttles at the airport and you can always arrange for one to take you back from the hotel as well. Public transportation options would be the BART which is our local subway system. This can take you from SFO to the Union City Bart Station which has cabs posted outside and it is then just a 10-15 cab ride to the hotel." Have inquired further how to recognize the shuttles at SFO. Yeah, shuttles is how Manu got to Aloft last year. IIRC it's useful only if you are shared with people going in the same direction. FYI: BART is $11, and taxi from Union -> Aloft is $20.

Hi! I attended last year's D conf and visited San Francisco the year before - both times without a car. There is a bus stop near Facebook. You can go via train (from Palo Alto) to San Francisco downtown or go by bus to the other side of the bay and use the sub (takes more time). In San Francisco you have the sub, trams and busses. You can check the connection with the routing planer from Google maps. (Hint: for the bus you need the exact change. At least for an European this is somewhat unusual.) Regards, Kai

While getting around in that area without a car is certainly possible, it's also going to be far more of a pain, and the odds of your tires being slashed even once are quite low, let alone a second time. So, I'd suggest that you just rent a car and not worry about your tires getting slashed. Clearly, you were quite unlucky last year, but I'd be very surprised if you were that unlucky again. Obviously, it's up to you though. - Jonathan M Davis

I don't have answers to your question, but figure I can pitch my daily plan. I'll a rental car with a hotel southwest of Facebook's campus (i.e. not Aloft). I plan to join any after conference party and would be able to chauffeur people around if not too far out of my general travel. But I prefer to make such agreements once I get down there.

That's what I did last year. I had a minivan and could have driven 7 people around, but the most I ever had onboard was 3. The sucky part is that I had to go easy on the Sam Adams at the Aloft bar. The salmon was great, though.

Aloft bar. The salmon was great, though.
Well, I kind of expect most people are going to make sure their needs are met on transportation. While I'd love to arrange to do car pooling, it is challenging and with most people flying into an unfamiliar area... I don't drink, so driving isn't much of an issue. My original thoughts was going to be to take a taxi to and from the airport then bus in the morning to Facebook. But it didn't seem like it would save much money over packaging the car with the flight purchase (and wasn't sure it would go smoothly).

 Hi all,

After last year's incident with my tires getting slashed, I'm
really hoping I can do without a car during this year's DConf.
 How feasible is this?

I'll be staying at Aloft. Would be great if there's someone I
can share a ride with. I've also seen there's a public bus
going more or less to FB and back, so I should be good there.
 (Right?)

But how about getting to SFO or down town? Am I causing myself
a whole lot of pain (albeit of a different kind) by not renting
a car? To be clear, I'm not looking for an economical option,
 just peace of mind.

 Lio.
Hi all, I will also stay at Aloft and have a car (at least 3 seats available). Also if somebody arrives on Tuesday, May 20th around 5:00 pm at San Francisco International Airport and needs to get to Aloft, please leave me a message. Dragos

Unless I bump into Walter and Brad this year, I'd take up on any offer. :-)

I'll arrive at 6:40pm, no check-in luggage, no customs. But don't wait on my account, I'll try to catch one of them shuttles I heard so much about. L.

I'll arrive at 6:24 PM (not 6:40) from Chicago.

I'll have room for a couple of people plus bags. I should have my car by 5:30PM Tuesday for anyone arriving around that time. And I'll be staying at Aloft. -- Adam Wilson GitHub/IRC: LightBender Aurora Project Coordinator
