digitalmars.D - [NEEDING HELP] Translation of Ali Cehreli's book in French

reply =?UTF-8?B?UmFwaGHDq2wgSmFrc2U=?= <raphael.jakse gmail.com> writes:
Hello everybody,

I'm the current translator of Ali Cehreli's book in French. You can find
it there:

http://dlang-fr.org/cours/programmer-en-d/

So far, I translated 48 chapters, and I began the 49th.

My work is versioned here:

SSH: git gitorious.org:programmez-en-d/programmez-en-d.git
HTTPS: https://gitorious.org/programmez-en-d/programmez-en-d.git

I write here today to announce that despite my efforts, I'm afraid I
can't find enough time and energy to keep translating the book anymore.
There are just too many things to get done beside this project.

I am willing to organize a translation group to finish the translation
to get this wonderful piece of work within French speaking people's reach.

Is anybody interested? Don't hesitate to send me an email if you are
willing to get involved, even for the smallest task. There are no small
tasks when a work is to get completed. I will tell you how to help.

ps: Due to technical reasons, I lost corrections people brought by using
the correction module present on the page. I'm really sorry for this.
This mean there are known errors in the current translation. This also
mean proofreading is also absolutely needed.

If there is anything you need, don't hesitate to tell me, I'll try to
answer the best I can do.

Thanks for your attention,

Cheers,
Raphaël.

Thank you Raphaël, it's been an amazing effort of yours! If I count correctly, that makes 56% completed. (Yay! Ali is back to counting percentages... :) )

ok, great ! What you can do is to choose a chapter which has not been translated yet and translate it. Chapters are here: http://ddili.org/ders/d.en/ Untranslated chapters begin from Variable "Number of Parameters". I have to finish the struct chapter. You can use a word processor to write the translated version (better use free format like ODT) and I will translate it back to whata, the format I use to write the translation, or, if you feel you can write directly in Whata, following exactly the format I use in the repository, it is even better. Or you can use DDoc or markdown and I'll translate it into whata. In the cases of Whata, Markdown and DDoc, I suggest you clone Ali's repository : https://bitbucket.org/acehreli/ddili folder src/ders/d.en. copy/paste the file corresponding to the chapter you are translating and progressively replace english sentences by French sentences. It would be great if you included the revision number or the date somewhere as a comment or a variable in your document, so we can keep track of the changes. When you are done, just send me your file, with your name so I can include it in the list of contributors. In any case I'll proofread, fix (asking you if it is an important modification), translate into whata if not already written in whata and send in the repository, adding you to the list of authors of the document. To begin the translation of a chapter, I suggest you tell it here so two people are not translating the same chapter at the same time. If you prefer proofreading, just proofread the html version here: http://dlang-fr.org/cours/programmer-en-d/ and send me an email for each error. You can use the tag [relecture] in the subject of the mail to ease my task, but I can live without. When you proofread a chapter, tel me so I can keep track of the chapters which has been proofread and who did it. I think I'll include all this data directly in the repo and in the html version of the book. Note on the translation: - Instead of "ci-dessus" or "ci-dessous", I used "ci-avant" and "ci-après" across the whole translation. - I translated slice into tranche. This is arguable, we can discuss about it. - I tried hard not to use English words. If I did, I put them in italic and I always explain what it means in French. Cheers, Raphaël.

Ok, I am gonna start with the "Variable number of parameters chapter", then. I am thinking about using ODT/LibreOffice at the moment, since I don't know much about whata and don't have a bitbucket account yet. I'll get into this when I have some translated work to show. Regards, Olivier

Ok, great! I didn't expected anybody to no "much about whata", it still lacks documentation. I don't think a bitbucket or a gitorious account is necessary, you just need to download a file, translate it and send it to me by e-mail if you want to work that way

Yes, I thought I answered to your mail. Sorry if I didn't. I read it quickly, it looks very well. Great, thank you very much for your work. I must find time to handle it, surely in the week. I also received proofreads for the first chapters, I will fix the translation soon. Thank you all for your work, that's great! Raphaël.

Great, if you think something needs to be changed, do not hesitate. I started the translation of the next chapter this weekend and I should have something to show in the next few days.

This is a great idea. I think we will consider contacting them if people who want to work on the translation here feel we should, or if the way we are working know doesn't fit, for any reason. My current feeling is that the D community is here in these newsgroups. The translation is sure an open source project, keeping the original license of Ali's work, as stated in the introduction of the translation. I wouldn't do anything closed on my own initiative if I don't have a very very good reason to, supposing such a reason even exists.

Alright, I just finished translating the "member functions"

Some remarks about the whole process :
- I translated "Member functions" to "méthodes" and "members" to
"propriétés". It seems to be the canonical object-oriented
jargon, but let me know if it's too awkward and I'll change it to
something more suitable. ("fonctions membres" perhaps ?)
- I translated the comments but I didn't touch the code.
- I translated the titles of the linked chapters, but not the
links themselves.
- Since I'm not very familiar with Ddoc, I left the "Macros" and
the title (line 3) parts unchanged for fear of accidentally
breaking something.

By the way, what email address should I send it to ?
Thanks.

méthode is good. propriétés sounds weird. You can just just use member for member, and champ for field.

Thanks for your work. Code should also be translated, no need to keep English for variable names in the translated book, as French version is here for people who prefer reading in English. You can send me your work on the email address I use here to post on the newsgroups (raphael dot jakse at gmail dot com) (don't hesitate to use a [traduction] tag so your email has less chance to get lost, though this is not absolutely necessary). I will translate and proofread anything to whata, no problem with links or the syntax of translated files. DDoc macros are specific to Ali's book, I won't keep them. By the way, Oliver, I mostly handled your first translated chapter, I will send you an email when I'm done. Great translation! I'm finishing the translation of the struct chapter so I can include all your translations and proofreads. I like "attribut" in French to mean "non function member". I think we should use this. I think you should stick to membre. Attribut will definitively cause confusion when you reach the UDA chapter.

All right! Would'nt this cause confusion with the vocabulary found when speaking about other programming languages like C++ or java though?

"Member functions" is usually translated by "fonctions membres" or "méthodes". "propriétés" is better left for property imho. "members" should be "champ" (= "fields").

What is the next chapter to need translation ?
It should be const ref Parameters and const Member Functions but Scroph might want to translate it as it seems to be the following of his chapter. I don't know what he wants to do. So you could translate Constructor and Other Special Functions?
Hum, I have just translated const ref Parameters and const Member Functions this week (it is the chapter I sent you on Thursday). I am going to do Constructor and Other Special Functions, then. :)
Oh, sorry, I should have double checked that before I sent this. All right, mutex given on Constructor and Other Special Functions ;-).

Hello everyone!

I managed to find time to handle the proofreads and translations I got
these last months.

I updated the book at http://dlang-fr.org/cours/programmer-en-d/

Four new chapter are available and chapter 1 to 31 (Tableaux
associatifs) have been proofread.

proofreads and another chapter are coming, as far as I know. This is
great, thanks to everyone involved for the help!

The translation's repository has moved, as Gitorious is closing. The new
address is:

git clone https://gitlab.com/programmez-en-d/programmez-en-d.git

For those who are interested in building the book in HTML, you will need
the lastest version of Whata (really important, the book is using new
features), here:

git clone https://gitlab.com/whata/whata-php.git
