That webpage really is fairly dreadful when using a dark theme. Also I'd only heard of two of the organizations. =C2=A0 --=20 Russel. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D Dr Russel Winder t: +44 20 7585 2200 voip: sip:russel.winder ekiga.n= et 41 Buckmaster Road m: +44 7770 465 077 xmpp: russel winder.org.uk London SW11 1EN, UK w: www.russel.org.uk skype: russel_winder

And yet if you are somebody in an enterprise with decision making authority and therefore with too much to do and using heuristic thinking a bit too much, which page makes the better impression?

Laeeth: This is the _most often_ asked question by friends - aka "Who is using it?" = is it one of those trendy, nerdy theory projects - or is actually trustworthy. So yes not only enterprises, but also "normal" people don't want to develop code in a language that is untrustworthy (=no huge userbase/backer), because they have the fear that it might not be compile-able in the future (=language death). Another aspect that's probably also an important factor, don't worry I don't think like this, but I know friends who do: "why should I learn a language if it's not used in production and thus I can't get a job with it?" -> I think it's a great idea, too. We should get such a site too! So which companies could be "friends of D"? Just throwing in some names I heard in the last couple of weeks: Sociomantic? Ebay? Facebook? Weka? So if you are using D in your company, please shout!

I just found this wiki site - https://wiki.dlang.org/Current_D_Use -> apparently it's a bit hidden, so let's get this to as "friends of D" to dlang.org? I would be happy to open a PR, which should I pick?

We want to show well-known companies of course. E.g. Facebook is a must. Sociomantic is a must, because they are essentially a D shop. While others use D only in internal or side projects. Another aspect is breadth. Show companies from different industries and also explicitly say that. There is Remedy Games for the games industry, Auburn Sounds for audio, Random Storm for security, etc. Another thought: Does the D foundation have official sponsors yet? Rewarding them with a mention on dlang.org might be a good idea.

I would put it on the start page like on other programming project pages

PR is out: https://github.com/dlang/dlang.org/pull/1312 Feel free to suggest other organizations and improve it. I hope that helps to improve the public image of D ;-) Should we also have a similar page "Notable projects in D"? The wiki page on this is a bit sparse, but I am sure we can find good projects?

That's great - looks really good and gets the message across clearly. I don't know, but one might need to check with the organisations involved before using their logo.

I think as long as we don't make any money (or are non-profit), we are good. Wikipedia has the following policy:
Note that it is not necessary to seek formal permission from
the owner in advance of using its logo, so long as the usage is
fair use, does not create any impression that the logo is
associated with Wikipedia or endorses either Wikipedia or the
article in which the logo appears, and does not create any
reasonable grounds for complaint by the owner.
...
This is a logo of an organization, item, or event, and is
protected by copyright and possibly trademark. It is believed
that the use of low-resolution images on the English-language
Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the
non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, of logos for certain uses
involving identification and critical commentary may qualify as
fair use under United States copyright law.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Logos Imho we clearly state differentiate by saying: "Organizations running D in production.".

Laeeth: This is the _most often_ asked question by friends - aka "Who is using it?" = is it one of those trendy, nerdy theory projects - or is actually trustworthy.
Yes, exactly. Cialdini's "Influence" social proof principle. It's not only a question of narrow rationality, but also because people in organizations tend to rely on heuristics for decision-making. So it's a no-brainer to tell people who is using it, and I wouldn't worry about filtering it - we should just organize by sector perhaps, and flesh out the information about the companies so it's more than just a single line.
So yes not only enterprises, but also "normal" people don't
want to develop code in a language that is untrustworthy (=no
huge userbase/backer), because they have the fear that it might
not be compile-able in the future (=language death).
Yes - so we should be honest, but not hide our light under a bushel, as we do currently. That part is one that should be shiniest, because it's key to make a good impression, and a wiki page doesn't really cut the mustard if someone isn't already determined to try D.
Another aspect that's probably also an important factor, don't
worry I don't think like this, but I know friends who do: "why
should I learn a language if it's not used in production and
thus I can't get a job with it?"
Well, it won't be possible at this stage to persuade everyone, and one shouldn't expect to succeed. But we could do a better job appealing to those who already want to try D but haven't yet taken the first step.
-> I think it's a great idea, too. We should get such a site
 too!

The wiki page is a good start. Maybe some kind of official sponsorship category makes sense (that's a matter for the Foundation or Walter+Andrei), but one should at least show that there are sensible companies not prone to using technologies out of mere idle intellectual curiosity that are doing real work with D.
