Anyone here have any experience with mobile 2D game engines like Corona or
Marmalade? I'm brand-new to this particular branch of gamedev and could use
some perspective. All I know is just what's on their respective websites.

If your new to game dev, or do it for a hobbie (like me) then check out Unity3D. It's got a great editor, good libraries, and the basic is free.

I'm not new gamedev, that's actually how I started out in programming (I have very fond memories of DOS/4GW and VGA). It's just this whole "iOS/Android" stuff that I'm new to. And ATM, I'm specifically looking at 2D. I'm sure you can do 2D in a 3D engine like Unity, but ATM I'm looking more in the direction of, like I said, Corona and Marmalade - stuff that's specifically designed for 2D.
